Visiting Assistant Professor, Dance
About
My current research focuses on the relationship across embodiment, knowledge production, and processes of identification. I am particularly interested in the significance of non-verbal discourses within colonial and post-colonial contexts. One of the primary concerns of my scholarship is to excavate knowledges produced and transmitted through movement practices, which have been shaped by the presence of Africa in places such as Brazil. In addition, I seek to historicize the active role that Africans and their descendents have had in the collective construction of imagined communities in the Americas.
My areas of specialization are Afro-Brazilian performative practices (e.g. dance forms and martial arts), with an emphasis on movement analysis and historiography. My qualifications include a Ph.D. in Culture and Performance from UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures and a graduate certificate in Ethnic and Racial Studies and African Culture from the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador (UFBA).
